Return to the Matchstick Factory

I went back to the matchstick factory recently to photograph some of the kids who use it as a playground.

Ségou

Spent the weekend in Ségou with the family. Sunday afternoon we crossed the Niger on a pirogue to visit a pottery village. On Sundays, they bury their pottery under straw and branches and set it ablaze to fire the clay.

Tabaski

The streets around our house are full of sheep that have been herded here from all over Mali. The shepherds walk hundreds of miles and spend weeks sleeping under the stars to sell their sheep in Bamako. This year there are too many sheep so the prices are low – $60 to $100 a head. On Sunday, the sheep population of Mali will drop by about 75% as families feast to celebrate Tabaski.
